Small Actions, Big Movements — International conference in South Africa, 2014
WRI has been actively supporting the development of the African Nonviolence and Peacebuilding Network since 2011. In July 2014,
WRI co-hosted the
Small Actions, Big Movements: The Continuum of Nonviolence conference in South Africa. For five days, 220 activists came together, over half of them from African countries.
In workshops, discussion groups, cultural events and plenary sessions, participants shared ideas about how to peacefully resist the different aspects of the continuum of violence. There was a special focus on the inclusion of gender perspectives on violence and conflict as well as on forms of resistance. Participants also explored the possibilities and limits of nonviolent resistance.
Establishing connections between activists from the Global South and organizations in Africa resisting dictatorial regimes using nonviolence is a tremendously important element in the creation of lasting mechanisms for a stable network.
